My son has severe eczema. The following are things that have helped:
1) Avoid going outside in the heat and keep the house cool. Weâve found that using ceiling fans really helps in the hotter months.
2) Run a cool mist humidifier in their room, especially when their skin is really dry.
3)
The 4 products I recommend for applying on the skin are:
Eucerin Cream
CeraVe Cream

Vaseline

Vanicream products â liquid soap, bath oil, sunscreen (I like this brand because they are free from common irritants â dyes, fragrances, lanolin)

4)
During times when your child is scratching a lot give a bleach bath
with Clorox in it. This
will kill staph bacteria which can lead to a skin infection. Ask your doctor about what amount
should be added to the bath for your child.

5) Keep fingernails cut short.
6) Use a Clear and Free laundry detergent. We use All Clear and Free and have not had any problems with it.
7) Wear cotton clothes. If possible, have your child wear long sleeves and pants to protect them from scratching and allergens.
8) Hardwood, tile, or laminate flooring. Weâve noticed that carpet traps dust, food, and dirt from the outdoors and is hot and itchy. Our son does better on non-carpet floors. Not only does the carpet bother him, but he uses it as a way to scratch his ankles. If you do not want to replace your carpet, I recommend vacuuming frequent and putting a sheet on the floor for your child to play on.
9) Get your child allergy tested. Food or something in the environment may be bothering them.
10) Avoid dust, animal dander, and pollen. If you notice dust bothers your child, do not vacuum around them.
11) Give a lukewarm bath once a day (or after your child is around environmental allergens) and apply lotion right after.
12) Buy an air purifier and change air filters frequently.
13) See a dermatologist. I know a lot of people do not want to use steroids or medicines for their childâs eczema, but if you do the above recommendations, then it should decrease the amount of medicine you have to use. One thing you donât want is to let the eczema get out of control where your child ends up with a bad skin infection.
